  • “You can rob pretty much anything,” says Rockstar’s Rob Nelson: stores, banks, jewelry stores and gang hideouts. You can rob alone or with your partner.
  • Story missions alone will not give you enough money, Nelson says. Robberies and stolen cars fill the gap, with stolen goods sold through fences.
  • Jason and Lucia each carry cash and share a bank account. If you are arrested or killed, you lose the cash you are carrying.

Robbery is one of the main ways Jason and Lucia make money in GTA 6. This page explains what you can rob, how a robbery works, fences and stolen cars, cash and the bank, and what money buys, from what Rockstar has said and what previews have reported.

Main ways to earn Robberies, selling stolen goods to fences, stealing and selling cars
What you can rob Stores, payday loan shops, banks, jewelry stores, gang hideouts
Alone or together Either, Rockstar says
Money Cash each character carries, and a shared bank account
Arrested or killed You lose the cash you are carrying
Dollar amounts Not announced. Figures online come from previews or leaks

Why money matters in GTA 6

“Simply completing missions won’t give you enough money to progress the story,” Nelson told Famitsu. “Stealing and selling cars is one way to make money, and robbing stores is another.”

Robberies are what you do between missions. In the IGN interview, Nelson said the robberies shown in one sequence of An Extended Look represent “a HUGE amount of what you can and need to be doing in this game in between story missions”. See Rob Nelson’s IGN interview.

What you can rob

“You can rob pretty much anything. So we can go into this place where you buy headphones, for example, and rob it,” Nelson told IGN.

Target What Rockstar has said
Stores and gas stations Can be robbed alone or as a pair, as a free-form robbery or a mission
Payday loan shops Named by Nelson as one of the places he had planned to rob in his demo
Banks “You can also rob jewelry stores or small banks either alone or as a pair,” Nelson told Famitsu
Jewelry stores “Places like jewelry stores have strong security, so you’re better off preparing properly”
Gang hideouts “The map can even tell you how much cash and how many drugs are being stored at a hideout”
A police impound lot In IGN’s demo, Jason pointed one out: it held a car they had been asked to steal

“You can do that as Jason and Lucia together, or you can do it on your own,” Nelson said.

The trailers show the pair holding up a liquor store and a bank. An Extended Look shows convenience store and diner holdups, a jewelry store and an armored car.

How a robbery works

Nelson walked through robberies in his interviews with Famitsu and IGN:

  • Getting in. “We have a snap gun — a special lock-picking tool — so let’s sneak inside instead.” Going in through the back keeps you unseen, but “kicking the door down would trigger the alarm.”
  • Cameras. “Once inside, if you destroy the security cameras, nobody can see you.” One preview reported removing the store’s security footage from a back room.
  • The safe. In IGN’s demo, Nelson looked for the safe’s combination. He carried an explosive that could have opened it, but that would have damaged some of the valuables inside.
  • Planning. “I should really be preparing for this robbery. Like by putting a vehicle out front,” Nelson said in the demo, before deciding not to.
  • The getaway. “The partner can drive pretty well, so you can often have the partner drive to get you away from the cops.”
  • Afterwards. “If you throw away the weapon you were carrying during the robbery, you can lower the level of suspicion at the cost of losing it.”
  • The client. Some robberies are done for someone else. You can deliver the loot together, “but you can also send Lucia alone.”

How robberies and money tie into the story: GTA 6 missions.

Fences and selling stolen goods

Stolen goods are sold through fences.

  • Drugs. “You can take stolen drugs to a fence,” Nelson told Famitsu.
  • Marked money. In The New York Times’ preview, the pair escaped a bank with marked banknotes that had to be taken to a fence.
  • Specialist fences. Previews describe different fences for different goods, such as cars and jewelry, unlocked as the story goes on.
  • Fences that remove trackers. “Eventually you’ll encounter vehicle fences who can remove trackers,” Nelson said.
  • Storing goods first. The garage in the Ultimate Edition and the one in the pre-order bonus each have “a secure place to deposit stolen goods to be fenced”, Rockstar says. See GTA 6 editions compared.

Stealing and selling cars

  • Check the value. “You can check its sale value at Pay ‘n’ Spray and decide whether it’s worth taking it to a fence to sell,” Nelson told Famitsu. A phone app scans parked cars and shows what a fence will pay.
  • Damage costs you. “The car fence will give you less money for it if it’s damaged,” he told IGN, so it pays to repair a stolen car before you sell it.
  • No quick repeats. “Even after you sell a car, you can’t bring another vehicle to the same Pay ‘n’ Spray for a while.”
  • Keep it instead. You can pay to register a stolen car and keep it. You start with room for three. See GTA 6 vehicles.

Cash and the bank

  • Two kinds of money. “In this game you have your own bank account in addition to the cash you’re carrying,” Nelson told Famitsu.
  • Shared bank, separate cash. Money you deposit goes into a bank account Jason and Lucia share. The cash each one carries stays separate, previews reported.
  • Bank it. “If you cause trouble and are taken down by the police or civilians, you lose all the cash you’re carrying,” Nelson said. Previews say you deposit at ATMs.

Other ways to make money

  • Hunting. It “will primarily be a way of making money”, YouTuber TGG reported from his preview.
  • Monster trucks and diving. Racing monster trucks and scuba diving for treasure both earn money, according to The New York Times’ preview, as reported by iGrandTheftAuto.

Every activity confirmed so far: things to do in GTA 6.

What money buys

Previews list clothes, haircuts, food, a gym membership, paint jobs and garages. “We have thousands of outfits,” Nelson told Famitsu. Safehouses change as the story goes on, chapter by chapter, he said, and previews say you cannot buy more. What is known about safehouses and garages is in GTA 6 properties. You cannot spend real money in the single-player game, Nelson told Kinda Funny.

What has not been announced

  • A stock market. No word from Rockstar or any preview. A 2021 rumor from a leaker said a stock market would return with cryptocurrencies. Rockstar has never confirmed it.
  • Casinos and gambling. GTA 6’s age ratings do not mention gambling, Dexerto noted. That is not proof there is none.
  • Buying businesses, or property other than garages.
  • Big heists. Nelson describes free-form robberies of stores, banks and jewelry stores, some of them also missions. Whether there are big multi-part heists, and whether they can be repeated, is not announced.
  • Prices and payouts. Previews give figures from a few thousand dollars for a small store upward, and a leaked clip gave others. None is official.
  • A money limit. A $20,000 limit on carried cash is often repeated. It began as a fan’s calculation from the cash meter shown in An Extended Look. Rockstar has not said.

GTA 6 money FAQ

How do you make money in GTA 6?

Mostly by robbing places, selling stolen goods to fences, and stealing and selling cars, according to Rockstar’s Rob Nelson. Story missions alone will not give you enough. Previews also mention hunting, treasure diving and monster truck racing.

Can you rob banks in GTA 6?

Yes. “You can also rob jewelry stores or small banks either alone or as a pair,” Rockstar’s Rob Nelson told Famitsu. Trailer 2 shows Lucia holding up a bank.

Are there heists in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not used the word “heist”. Stores, banks and jewelry stores can be robbed freely between missions, and some robberies are also missions, Rob Nelson told Famitsu. Rockstar has not said whether there are big multi-part heists, or whether they can be repeated.

Is there a stock market in GTA 6?

Not announced. Neither Rockstar nor any preview has mentioned one.

Do you lose money when you die in GTA 6?

You lose the cash you are carrying if you are killed or arrested, according to Rockstar’s Rob Nelson. Money in the bank is safe, so deposit it at an ATM.

Is there a money limit in GTA 6?

Not announced. A $20,000 limit on carried cash is often repeated online, but it started as a fan’s estimate, not a Rockstar statement.
