Can you buy property in GTA 6?
Only garages, as far as Rockstar has said. Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told Famitsu that you start with room for three vehicles and can buy garages around the map to own more.
Nobody at Rockstar has said you can buy a house, an apartment, a nightclub or any other business. Safehouses come with the story, and the YouTuber TGG reported from Rockstar’s preview that you cannot buy more. If a site lists GTA 6 properties with prices, it is guessing. What money does buy is in GTA 6 money and robberies.
How safehouses work
GTA 6’s safehouses are meant to feel like homes, not just places to save. Nelson told IGN they are “probably closer to the camps in RDR2 than they are to safehouses in any GTA game before.”
- They change with the story. “The story progresses chapter by chapter, and the characters’ hideouts also change as it progresses,” Nelson told Famitsu, in a translation by GTAVice.net. The translation uses “hideouts” for safehouses.
- People live there. “It’s a space where the two of them live, so you have to carry a mug to somewhere it can properly be placed,” Nelson said. Everyone living there keeps their own daily schedule.
- Your partner has a life there too. Switch to Jason and “sometimes he’s in the Safehouse, sometimes he’s out doing various things,” Nelson told IGN. The other one may text to say they are going to bed, GTA Intel reported from the same interview.
- Shared homes and visitors. Jason and Lucia can live in the same safehouse, some safehouses belong to other characters, and other characters can visit, IGN’s preview reported.
- Everyday things. You can grab food from the fridge, The New York Times reported from a visit to Jason’s safehouse. You can shorten or shave hair and beards at home, but a new style needs a barber or salon, IGN’s preview reported. Personal vehicles can be kept at safehouses.
How the couple’s life together works is in GTA 6 relationship system.
Where Jason and Lucia live
Jason’s house in the Leonida Keys
Jason starts in the Keys, in a house owned by his boss. “Brian’s letting Jason live rent-free at one of his properties,” Rockstar’s profile of Brian Heder says, “so long as he helps with local shakedowns, and stops by for Lori’s sangria once in a while.” In Trailer 2, Brian finds Jason up on the roof.
The story begins there. “Jason’s first house, which appeared in the trailer, is here,” Nelson told Famitsu, speaking of the Keys. Rockstar’s own Ultimate Edition text puts some bonus vehicles at “Jason’s Safehouse”, without saying which one, and An Extended Look shows Jason shooting hoops outside a house The AU Review calls his.
The motel room in Trailer 1
Trailer 1 shows Jason and Lucia together in a motel room after a getaway. Rockstar has not said whether the motel is a safehouse. Its description of Port Gellhorn mentions “cheap motels”. More in GTA 6 trailers.
The apartment in An Extended Look
An Extended Look shows Jason and Lucia at home in a detailed apartment, with Jason trying to hurry Lucia as she picks an outfit. One preview player reported that an apartment in the demo he saw comes from later in the story, around Chapter 3.
Rockstar has not said where Lucia lives when she leaves prison, or how many safehouses there are.
Garages: the property you can buy
- Buying garages. “Early in the game you only have storage space for three vehicles. By purchasing garages around the map, you can own more vehicles,” Nelson told Famitsu, in GTAVice.net’s translation. With three cars stored, you have to sell one to make a new car your personal vehicle, he said. Prices and the number of garages have not been announced.
- Shore Court Garage. The pre-order bonus comes with a garage near Ocean Beach, with a weapon locker and a secure place to keep stolen goods until you sell them to a fence, according to Rockstar’s pre-order details.
- Paradise Garage. The Ultimate Edition adds a garage in Watson Bay with a weapon locker.
Both edition garages become available as the story goes on, Rockstar says. More in GTA 6 editions compared, and the cars that come with them in GTA 6 vehicles.
Storing, registering and losing cars
- Registering a stolen car. Pay ‘n’ Spray registers a stolen car as yours, for a fee, Nelson told Famitsu. You can check what it would cost before you pay.
- Calling your car. An app called Scooter Bros brings your personal vehicle to you, according to Famitsu.
- The trunk. Your personal vehicle carries spare outfits and the weapons you have bought, Nelson told IGN.
- The impound lot. If police find a car you abandoned during a crime, it can be impounded, and getting it back costs more, preview players reported. Police impound lots can also be robbed. “That was truly emergent for me when we drove past that car park and Jason suggested we do that job,” Nelson told IGN. More in GTA 6 wanted level and police.
Money: one account for two
Jason and Lucia share a bank account: money they deposit goes into a joint account, Esquire reported, and cash you carry can be lost. The story alone will not pay for everything Leonida has to sell, Esquire’s preview added.
A property empire does not seem to be the point of the story. “Maybe the American Dream is more modest now. It’s a house for your family and your loans paid off instead of wild success,” Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, told LOVE Magazine. That describes the story’s theme, not a feature. More in GTA 6 story.
What has not been announced
- Buying houses, apartments, businesses or nightclubs
- Income from property
- Saving at a safehouse
- A wardrobe at home, or decorating and furniture
- How many safehouses there are, and where Lucia lives after prison
- Garage prices, locations and sizes
Some sites name GTA 6 safehouses, such as a “Starlet Motel” or a “Bayside” apartment, and give each one a number of parking spaces. Rockstar has not used those names or given those numbers.
How property worked in earlier games
| GTA Vice City (2002) | GTA V (2013) | Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homes | Safehouses to buy, plus the Vercetti Estate | Safehouses come with the story; you cannot buy more | The gang’s camp, which moves with the story |
| Businesses | Eight assets to buy, such as the Malibu Club for $120,000. Each pays out after you finish its missions | Businesses with weekly income, such as Los Santos Customs for $349,000 and three cinemas for $10 million to $30 million | No |
| Garages | Yes | A four-car garage for each lead, $30,000 each | No, horses instead |
These are the released games. In Vice City, the assets you buy also work as save points. GTA 6 is closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 so far: Rockstar compares its safehouses to the camps. More on the step from GTA V in GTA 6 vs GTA 5.
